The DTE Community Allotment

The Down To Earth allotment events are held fortnightly at our site based in Derby City Centre.

The Community allotment learns and shares tips about everything gardening such as: sowing, planting, nurturing, growing organically, natural fertilisers, composting, no-dig soil techniques and cooking homegrown food.

Everyone is welcome, no experience required. You just need to be ready to get stuck in (the mud) with suitable clothing for our wonderful, everchanging English weather.

In The Beginning: Mill Dam Allotments

    Facebook Update 24/1/2019:

It’s one thing talking the talk but you gotta walk the walk too.

    So here goes;

I would like to invite any voluteers to the first meet up of the year at the DTE allotment!

    Sat 2nd Feb, 11am
    @
    Mill Dam Allotments, Markeaton, Derby

We’ve got a patch of land that we can build a community on, that we can learn gardening skills from each other on, that we can use to show what happens when people come together and work towards a common goal 👊 and most importantly, enjoy watching develop and grow!

I’m at amateur myself, I don’t really know what I’m doing and this is pretty much unknown territory but I really want to give it a shot and see what we can create!

If this is something you’re interested in, please email or DM me so I have an idea of numbers.

Meet up no1: Poo Party! 💩🐮 Hope to see you there!

    The First Harvest

    Instagram Post July 14th 2019

    The first harvest!

We been on this allotment for nothing more than 8 months and look at it!
So proud of these guys and everyone else who’s been involved down at the allotment!

@danfoley29 and @machandehal have never really done anything garden related and 4 months ago they asked us how they could get involved.

Now they’re regulars turning up, watering, helping others and are now practically fam.

Not gonna lie it’s pretty emosh when I see how far they’ve come and yeah there is a lump in my throat when I look at this picture 😂

Big up guys you should be so proud of yourselves!

Would also like to say without @jonnybods being my right hand man we wouldn’t be where we are!🙌🏻 Here’s 🍻 to many more harvests! 👇🏻✌🏻🌎💚

    Pumpkin

Instagram Post from September 11 2019.

We’ve had a birth on the allotment! 😂

It was time to take this baby home,
(slide across to see how big he is!) 🎃
I’m so happy, this has been one of the biggest achievements down the lottie.
I’ve never really grown a pumpkin properly and this is the first of many I hope!

Pastures New - Ashbourne District Allotment Association

Facebook Post from 3rd November 2019

It’s pretty incredible what people can do when they come together!

We’ve been kindly donated a polytunnel and some money from some absolutely amazing people who can see our vision. We’ve then brought the vision to life with people; a small community coming together for a bigger purpose.

Yesterday we got the polytunnel up (just a few bits and bobs left to finish), we completed our compost bins, made a start on the pallet fencing and began laying cardboard down for our no-dig beds. I think it’s safe to say we smashed it!! Seeing this idea come to life fills me with so much joy, words can’t really describe it. There’s been no real invested money involved (other than my own and any kind donations from people within the allotment community) in this project. This is something that people are volunteering there own spare time to do, we’ve got this far with pretty much nothing; just the goodness of people and their ability to come together. What an achievement that is!

Big up @danny_seeley for coming up and leading the polytunnel build, I owe you a hard day’s graft at @lawsonsmarketgarden 😂

Big up everyone involved in DTE, honestly you’ll never know how much I appreciate you all. I’m so glad to have you guys as part of the team 💪🏻Onwards and upwards for next year 👇🏻✌🏻🌍💚

    Allotment Patch is taking shape

Facebook post from the 26th February 2020

    It’s all about these ones🌱

Sat with your mates putting the world to rights, planning on what freshness ya going to grow this year.

Honestly these lottie meet ups are much more than meet the eye. Not only are they a way to meet like minded souls but they’re also a way for us to connect on a deeper level with nature. Working towards a higher purpose and all that jazz. 💚

Not just all this but you know what? It’s actually sick to build and grow something with other people. Can’t wait to see how this place takes shape. Not just that can’t wait to see how the gang develop with this space. These guys are legends and I couldn’t be prouder! 🙌🏻
